Anacapri, “above Capri”, as named by the Greeks. This beautiful village, with its own municipality, is an integral part of the island. Inhabited since Roman times, as proved by numerous remains, Anacapri had its heyday between the nineteenth and twentieth century, when it became a coveted “retreat” for artists from across Europe who came to spend their holidays and to find inspiration.
It is an elegant and lovely village. Although differing from Capri for position and urbanistic structure its aspect is peculiar and pleasant. It is less famous in the international tourism world but encloses interesting sites, monuments and excursions.
Starting from Capri you can reach it through the provincial road, from where you will see enchanting landscapes and views of the coast and the mountains. After the Grotta della Madonna (Virgin Mary Grotto) and the Barbarossa Castle, you will arrive in Anacapri.
The Barbarossa Castle was built to defend Anacapri from Saracen raids between the X and XII century. The castle has a square plan and two massive towers and is named after the Turkish Barbarossa who invaded the island and destroyed the fortress in 1535, of which only few traits of the old walls remain.

Spring and autumn
In the spring and autumn visitors can also see the ornithologists at work. They ring birds and talk about migratory birds.
From the fortress ruins you can also enjoy a dazzling view down towards the town of Capri with the Sorrentine Peninsula in the distance.

In the event of rain the walk will be cancelled.
Every Thursday from April to October, the San Michele Foundation organises guided tours to Monte Barbarossa.
